Ask me a question

Several people asked me why there wasn’t “ask & answer” feature here. Which is surprising, not because all sites should have one, but because I don’t get many visitors- hence, “several” (read: two) people interested in it came as a surprise.

“Ask & answer” feature was a popular trend around 2005, and it’s been used & abused. Not being a trendy girl, I ignored it. But since there are people interested in it, and I am trying to please my visitors, both of you can relax: ask & answer feature is here.

So, here it is…

Ask a question

What to ask? What not to ask?

It’s completely up to you. Hopefully, questions will help me create a decent “FAQ” section and tell me what people think about this site and what they (both) want to see here. Since nobody uses contact form.

As for nasty, offensive and otherwise stupid questions- like I said in the rules, I am not easily offended. But of course I reserve the right not to answer on any questions I choose not to.

I heard people tend to get all sorts of bizarre and pointless questions, but what else to expect?- This is internet after all, and people are bored. So go ahead, make my day.

Weird website search

What’s considered to be a “weird website search” is highly subjective, but ways people find this site are sometimes pretty strange.

Not to mention there’s nothing- I repeat: nothing here that would be useful to people searching for, say, “Gary Oldman gay pictures”. Yes, that was an actual search. And no, I have no idea how “they” got here, since, well… You get the idea.

Some of the more interesting recent searches:

  • “edward and bella” “lack of chemistry”
  • frusciante “social situations”
  • Gary Oldman gay pictures (Is there something I should know about?)
  • twilight forest scene
  • my life is awkward mira mira
  • buva can i see you?
  • jacob rape hard core twilight (Didn’t you mean: “Edward rape”?)
  • black guys do it right
  • jeff ament sexy
  • freckles dark hair (Really? Me too)

Site Glamour Contest: Please vote for me

Remember Site Glamour Contest? Well, the voting is here! If you think this site is interesting, please vote for Mira of jefflion.net. (Or any other site that you find glamorous). But remember, you have only one vote :)

Vote for Mira of jefflion.net

We (the contestants, I mean) still have to write a short article on one of the four topics. I already chose the subject; it’s not the most interesting or demanding one, but it’s the only one I can write about. Two of the topics are very interesting, but I know very little (if anything) about the subjects, and the third one could get too personal, which I hate (don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad thing to write about personal stuff, it’s just not my style). So I opted for the fourth one.

PS-”Eclipse” rant coming soon, I promise. I just have to read the book first. It’s really boring and I’m reading about 3 pages a day. Nothing happens in that novel, except for a few “lolwutz” moments that are worth mentioning. But I’ll be there, I promise.

It’s Jefflion’s birthday today!

A little more than two years ago, I found this page, and the rest is… Well, history.

Ok, I know it’s lame. I know. Still, nothing makes me laugh more than absurd, and I find this one – no matter how stupid and random and pointless and, well, lame it may be – irresistible. To the point I’ve decided to name my website after it.

Jefflion.net was born (well, registered) on September 12th 2007. I honestly don’t remember if I created an actual website right away, or a few weeks later. In any case:

Happy birthday jefflion.net!
(May the hair on your footer never fall out)

PS- Instead of a cake:

Recover a (Wordpress) site infected by a nasty iframe

If you encounter a nasty warning like this one:

Warning: Unexpected character in input: ”’ (ASCII=39) state=1 in /home/yourwebsite/public_html/index.php on line 17

instead of your lovely blog, don’t despair. Your website has been hacked and a malicious iframe has been placed all over your files.

Ok, that didn’t sound comforting. But fear not, it’s not as bad as it sounds. It happened to me tonight, and I freaked out. Luckily, I managed to fix things pretty quickly, becuase, basically, all you need to do is delete the malicious iframe and replace it with the healthy lines.

Here’s a first aid tutorial on how to fix things. It should work. The example I’m working on is a Wordpress- powered blog.

1. First, run your antivirus/antimalware checker. Chances are that your computer is infected, so detect all the malicious programs and remove them. Clean your computer as much as you can.

2. Log on to your account (Control Panel) and change your password. Immediately.

3. Ok, and now we should fix your site. The worm has found all of your crucial files and changed them by adding a malicious iframe at the bottom of the documents. The iframe is placed instead of the real last lines in your documents, so you should be able to delete it and replace it with the original lines (that’s why you always need a backup).

Basically, you need a backup of the Wordpress (the version you were using) and all the websites hosted on the infected domain. If you don’t have a backup of the Wordpress, download one from the official website (here’s the release archive page if you’re not using the latest version of the script).

The worm doesn’t infect all the files, only the specific ones, usually index.php files. Chances are that all of your index.php files on the domain are infected. Furthermore, the worm has infected files in several directories (example for Wordpress 2.8.4):
- public_html: index.php
- wp-admin: index-extra.php, index.php
- wp-content: index.php
– plugins: index.php
– themes: index.php and the index files in all of your themes
- wp-includes: default-filters.php and default-widgets.php

To find which of the files are infected, take a look at the last modified date. All the infected files were last modified on the same date, probably very recently, so those are the files you have to replace with the backup ones.

4. Once you have your backup files, it’s easy. Just replace infected files (or simply the infected lines) with the original ones. It should fix the problem.

5. Change your Wordpress password if you were unable to do so earlier. Hey, change all the passwords you can think of. Prevent programs (such as ftp clients) from remembering your username and password. I know it’s boring to type your login info anytime you need to update a file, but it is safer. It’s a lesson I learned tonight.
